Some of the most enduring Gabbehs use no dye at all, letting the natural colours of the fleece do the work. Here the weaver set a pale ivory field inside a darker brown border, both drawn straight from the sheep, so the only contrast is the wool's own range from cream to brown. The result is calm and timeless, and because hand-spun fleece is never perfectly uniform, the soft striations across the field are the fingerprint of a handmade piece, the trace of a single weaver rather than a machine.
